Vocalist / Organist / Composer / Educator
Teresa Lee is one of the most prominent vocal talents to emerge from China in recent years. Her distinctive style and innovative approach have made her a standout figure in both the Shanghai and broader Chinese jazz scenes, earning her widespread recognition.
Teresa’s affinity for music began at an early age. She started studying piano at the age of four and transitioned to organ at eleven. By fourteen, she had already released her debut solo organ album. Her exceptional talent earned her a coveted place in the prestigious Organ Program at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music’s affiliated high school at fifteen, the same year she performed her first solo organ concert. At eighteen, she was admitted to the Modern Instrumental Music Department at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, majoring in organ. However, during this time, Teresa discovered her true passion for singing and began performing jazz and creative music regularly. She quickly became China’s leading jazz vocalist, collaborating with top musicians and developing her own original compositions with her band.
Teresa moved to New York City to further immerse herself in the jazz world and pursue new creative opportunities. She continued her studies at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, where she earned a master’s degree in Jazz Studies, honing her craft and expanding her artistic horizons.
She shared the stage with 20-time Grammy Award-winning guitarist Pat Metheny and his Unity Band, performing a Chinese folk song, Kang Ding Qing Ge, at the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Jazz Festival. For two consecutive years (2015 and 2016), she was invited to join Grammy-winning saxophonist Wayne Escoffery on his China tour as a guest vocalist.
Beyond her live performances, Teresa is also involved in studio work. Her upcoming debut album, Wake Up and Dream, is a collection of unique and personal songs recorded with her band in Shanghai. It reflects her Chinese heritage while incorporating the sounds of contemporary Western jazz, and features a notable guest appearance by acclaimed New York pianist Aaron Parks.
In 2014, Teresa contributed to 3rd Month, the debut album of renowned jazz violinist, producer, and film composer Peng Fei, a winner of the 26th Taiwan Golden Melody Award for Best Composer. She performed the track My Little Happy Hour and participated in Peng Fei’s 2015 concert, Musings of a Loner, with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the Shanghai Concert Hall. In 2016, Teresa collaborated with jazz bassist Curtis Ostle on his album No Mind, recording alongside esteemed musicians Tim Armacost, David Berkman, Wayne Tucker, and Itay Morchi.
In 2018, she contributed backing vocals to Learn to Live, an original album by acclaimed jazz composer and pianist John Escreet, which featured Grammy-winning trumpeter Nicholas Payton, veteran saxophonist Greg Osby, bassist Matt Brewer, and drummers Eric Harland and Justin Brown. The critically acclaimed album was named one of the best albums of 2018 by Downbeat magazine.
Most recently, in 2024, Teresa participated in a landmark performance, playing organ duets with John Escreet and collaborating with 40 singers in the premiere of composer Louis Cole’s new choral work on the Great Organs at the First Church in Los Angeles.
